James McNeil Whistler was an early influence. His use of space, color, minimal composition was informative. Learning to paint with a sensorial intention allows me to convey time, place, and emotion, drawing the viewer in to engage and synthesize with the subject. Studying with two modern masters of the Frederick Wong and Paul Ching-Bor expanded my understanding of the capacity of various surface properties combining with the fluid nature of an aqueous medium. Watercolor, like life, is both deliberate and spontaneous. Combining those ambiguous qualities and harnessing the intensity is both exhilarating and inspiring.

ARTIST STATEMENT “I love the character of watercolor, coupled with the malleable quality of paper, always presenting opportunities to encounter changing balances”. Transformation is the guiding principle for his creative output; oscillating from deliberate to spontaneous, creating degrees of transparency, ambiguity, light and form. The work speaks to the transience of life, always in motion, no beginning, no end, always rejuvenating. The subject is captured coming into or out of existence. Sometimes obscured, sometimes distorted, sometimes familiar, creating mystery, curiosity and beauty. The more sculptural surface of the Transformation series ask the observer to explore alternate perspectives in a literal and figurative manner. Expanding the scope of the configuration of a “painting” and questioning the formality and standardization of these versatile mediums. “Art shapes, elevates, and shifts our point of view” David Zwimer ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Sidney’s formative years in a Maryland high school art program for gifted and talented students, were influenced by fantasy illustration masters Boris Vallejo, Jeffrey Jones, Roger Dean and N.C. Wyeth. In the first years of college he was awarded two commissions for murals. This inspired a move to NYC to attend Parsons School of Design. More exposure to late 19th, early and mid 20th century masters James McNeill Whistler, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer and David Levine had a special capacity to effect the eventual direction Mr. Edwards work. After a brief professional illustration career, overtaken by the digital revolution, Sidney turned to graphic design to support a small family. After his pivotal contributions, transforming too small brands into iconic status, a transition from the corporate to the cerebral was necessary. Never losing touch with his roots simultaneously taking classes in the atelier style studying with masters Gustav Rehberger, Nicki Orbach, Frederick Wong, Silya Kiese, Paul Ching-Bor and Michael Pellettieri at the Art Students League of NY. Recently discovering the works of Eva Hesse, Agnes Martin, and Sam Gilliam validated a long held opinion that what and how we view painting can be expressed in unexpected and transcendent forms.
