When Michelangelo sees a stone to be sculpted, it is said that the original image already exists inside of it, and he worked to reveal it. What I felt while working on this work was that, for the artist, work existed from the beginning of this world, but could it not be a form of work that could not be recognized because it was not formed? I thought. In that regard, I thought that perhaps the realm of science and the realm of art, where research and discovery of unknown realms can be identical. Michelangelo's works of rebellious slaves and dying slaves show the neoplatonism thinking that our souls are imprisoned in the prison of the body, but they struggle to escape. Here, Freedom in modern society (2019), I felt similar to my work on freedom, and it was based on Michelangelo's rebellious slaves and dying slaves that I started to work on further expanding my ideas about freedom. The sculptures in the work are not yet completed by universal standards, and parts of their bodies are constrained by stones. But they are struggling to get out of that bondage. And a ray of light is pouring through the dark clouds. This light signifies a kind of allegory, a revelation of freedom. Freedom can be thought of in various ways depending on where each of us lives. To me, freedom means an environment where I can paint continuously without time, space, or financial constraints. But in common, I think that pursuing a certain value requires patience and pain. As if there is a part of me that feels pain and endures in the past and present life outside of work for paint. Through this work, we embody us who are locked in a rock, but who realize the true value of life (myself freedom) and struggle in pain and perseverance to achieve it. It can be very painful at the moment, but it is a must-go process, and through the ray of light shining through the clouds, the path is hopeful, and it contains the message that we can realize and achieve the true value that each of us pursues in our lives.
