The subject of Gangs is treated according to a process that goes from figurative to documentary. This is why the macrostructure of this series is reminiscent of both the sacred polyptychs of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and the comics: a continuous narrative is set up around the phenomenon of gangs in permanent war for the conquest of territories, without offering a demonstration or a moralizing reading. The figurative scenes are composed on a background where, in the violent tones dominating yellow or red, a landscape of misery, the misery of the favelas south-representative of the misery of all the suburbs devastated by war and crime, including those of the rich cities of the Western world, this world which is present in fragments, in the details of an aging urban civilization (billboards, graffiti, street art). It is probably the series that has the most extensive use of the quotation and recycling process, of materials (pasted papers from advertising posters) and details from comics and films, and even documentaries on Gangs at War.
