About The Artwork

This piece reflects the colors and sensory effects of being on the ocean and searching for humpback whales off the coast of Cape Cod. This piece is No. 2 in the Cape Cod collection. The series depicts the sights, sounds and colors of the Cape and Islands. My style is loose and explores the intersection of light and color, shape and texture. The negative spaces left behind become part of the composition. The strong brushstroke work works as a scaffolding for the drawing and then the painting. These layers can be viewed independent of each other or together. Specifically, this piece uses large circles of sea foam green to create swirls of color on which the shells and the whale reside. Again, the intersection of color, light (white) and shape work as components of the composition. The bright greens, aqua and blues evoke the ocean and the swirls depict the water foaming behind the whale watching vessel. Of course the shells and seaweed are part of the narrative of the sea.

Influences include Impressionistic masters such as Monet, Bonnard, Picasso, and Van Gogh. I call upon vibrant color brushwork and light to translate places, animals, and abstract ideas onto canvas and paper. Creating two distinct planes of light and color, I use light leaks, shape, color, saturation and shape to expose wonder. I work with acrylic washes, inks, pencils, gel mediums, and glosses to create texture and movement. In addition to representational work, I create semi abstract paintings that revolve around a central color. Aiming for a meditative, calm abstract style that is simultaneously timeless and modern.
