About The Artwork

Self-portrait As Cleopatra. Here I try to dissociate from my painful romantic break up by placing it into a purposely theatrical setting reminiscent of classical opera. The base of the column rendered in reverse perspective. Pointillism denotes emotional tension. And flowers, as usual, symbolize an abundance of thoughts, their endless train in my head. As ancient aboriginal cultures, in order to free themself from the fear, to control that fear, intentionally chose their interaction with sources of fear through their art, totems and rituals. In this artwork I choose depicting my emotions as a theatrical act, to sublimate it into an ironical art piece to retrieve back my psychological power. At this current moment, writing this caption, I understand that aesthetics is always a tool to control our emotions, our responses to the challenges of life. As on a deepest personal level everyone has their own tragedy, either we choose the clothes, the style of our environment, the music we listen to, the art we put in our home, with all of those aesthetic decisions we elect the way we deal with bigger and more global issues of life.

I am a Russian artist based in Sacramento, California. I was born in the Soviet Union, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and lived in Moscow until the political climate of the country became a nightmare. My creative spirit was diminished during this time, but found new life in the United States. I draw upon the traditions of academic art and Impressionism, with a particular focus on the use of color. To me, the color theory is an almost spiritual approach to painting. I try to capture the beauty of the relationship between warm and cold colors, often in night scenes illuminated by moonlight. I wouldn't be able to convey pain and suffering, but rather a timeless atmosphere that viewers can take away and appreciate it as a way of escape.
