About The Artwork

In this artwork, two selkies, mythological beings capable of transforming from seals into humans, having transformed from their seal forms, explore the human world for the first time. The azure expanse of the ocean behind them symbolizes their natural habitat, a realm of fluidity and enigma. The rocky shore represents the tangible, structured world of humans. The selkies are depicted in a state of curiosity and wonder, they have found artifacts from the human world - perhaps stones or shells adorned with human touch. These objects serve as symbols of connection between two disparate worlds. In mythology, selkies often represent dualities - freedom and captivity, wildness and domesticity. Here too, this duality is captured; they are neither fully part of the sea nor the land but exist in an ephemeral state between both worlds. The painting evokes themes of discovery and transformation inherent to mythological narratives about selkies. It invites viewers to contemplate boundaries - not just between land and sea but also between different states of being, urging a reflection upon our own transformations and discoveries.
