About The Artwork

Stories of Love and Longing Marjorie Atwood tells stories in her paintings. In this body of work, Atwood uses the metaphor of storytelling to address the wounds that human industrial life, greed and shortsightedness has inflicted on our planet. When we think of “storytelling” we generally think of childhood, of being nurtured, entertained even. Here the stories are of hope for the future and forgiveness, healing. The animals shown represent animals that are endangered from the human impact on the environment. Yet it is not just words that tumble from the readers mouth. Always a student of art history, Atwood often pulls on classical art reference in her paintings. In this series, Botticelli’s Primavera has served as inspiration for our storytellers. The blossoms curling from the readers lips undermine the hope of the stories they read. The flowers are a symbol of man’s sense of manifest destiny. The idea that once something has been “discovered” by a human, they will make it “better”. But just as when explorers discovered the islands in the Pacific, the Americas, etc., they brought disease and discontent. They delivered oppression in the guise of enlightenment and spiritual redemption. Yet these stories are told with beauty being ever present by Atwood, hoping that we won’t forget or turn our backs on the beauty to be found in our world. Hoping that we can change and salvage the many gifts that we have been given.
