My first career has been in music, so I have always found inspiration in musical ideas (rhythm, line, the layering that creates harmony). With this series I am exploring a more overt reference, using musical notation in the hand of J.S. Bach. The excerpts used are all from the Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin. This is music I have loved, studied, recorded (Centaur Records 2472/3) and performed for over 30 years; working with it visually in this way is an extension of that intimacy. Some of these works reflect my feelings about the specific colors of different harmonic keys; in some I sought to translate the evocative character, gesture or affect of a particular movement; others arose simply as meditations on the graphic beauty of Bach’s notation and the mystery of written language. This painting (along with others in the series) started with a print onto watercolor paper of a digital manipulation of the original Bach facsimile. It's currently on exhibit in Berkeley, CA.

I grew up in a family of musicians and began my professional life as a violinist, while pursuing an extended and eclectic education in the visual arts. The connections between art and music are a strong influence on my work, as both are abstract expressions of feeling, whether using wavelengths of sound or light. I really love color, and I use it as my primary tool for exploring the shifting nuances of the energetic atmosphere we live in. I use very thin layers of paint, subtractive techniques, and both controlled and uncontrolled mark-making to create resonant depths; I want to make paintings that feel like being immersed in music. In addition to music (especially the layering that creates harmony or dissonance), my work is inspired by the organic forms of the natural world, geometry, existential experience and mindfulness.
