About The Artwork

Created for the Jerusalem Bienalle, 2017, this work depicts the moment of the parting of the Red Sea as described in the book of Exodus. It is compositionally based on a panel of the Dura Europos synagogue, 245 CE, and modeled after photos from Cecil B. De Mille's The Ten Commandments, 1956, The Shadow pulp magazine, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, 1954, and other movie stills. The goal was to create a work commenting on the text and still addressing our media-conscious postmodern world. It may be enjoyed as both a pious work and a work which comments on the nature of miracles and spectacle.
