The centaur of the north was inspired by pancho villa’s legacy that has continued to bring pride into Mexican households to this day. From a young age Villa was orphaned, and after taking vengeance for his sister that had been assaulted, he fled to the mountains where he taught himself to read, write, and became knowledgeable of the land. After joining a rebellion to remove a dictator that reigned over Mexico as a soldier, villa’s ingenuity and natural leadership kick started his significant role as a freedom fighter against corrupt dictatorship that remained in his country. This also lead to him becoming governor of Chihuahua, Mexico and His efforts to bring a revolution made him a significant contributor to Mexican history. Saul Gomez inspired by Villas’s bravery and dedication to his people, used elements seen in pop art, photo realism, and expressionism to bring current society and connect it to Mexican culture. Using vibrant contrasting colors to signify the complex soul and character that was Pancho Villa. Gomez also incorporated precision in carving the shape of his face with acrylic paint, spray paint and markers to add a more enhanced texture to help help bring a light to his eyes to emphasize the pain he had endured and witnessed throughout the course of his life and what sacrifices he made for his people. Pancho Villa’s independence as one man to learn and spread his acquired knowledge and to empower his soldiers, his country and to keep his land with its culture United is what drove Gomez to create this piece. The purpose for the audience to resonate with another culture and to feel proud of what his Mexican heritage has become through its history of hard work to survive and protect their land that past leaders like Pancho Villa had fought for. The sacrifices of shedding blood, sweat and tears to keep a hold of his country and his people is demonstrated through the rivaling colors on his face that can represent differing gangs, which similar to his rivalry that lead to his demise, can be seen in current climate of north and west gangs that fight for their territory.
