About The Artwork
This is a work in response to William Butler Yeat's poem about the Civil War in Ireland following the 1916 Easter Rising. In his poem he writes of 'the clanging of wings' to suggest the disruption of the country which would change forever the Ireland that he knew. It is an contrapuntal juxtaposition of words suggesting that because of war the soft, soundless, feathery texture of wings will be no more. In Irish mythology the goddess of war takes the form of a crow. This painting obtusely suggests the destruction wrought by the brutality of war.
