THE CORINTHIAN Print

This piece started out as a realistic portrait but it lacked the power and expressiveness that I wanted. So I laid in flatter bands of bright green color and overlaid that with the the brushed heavy black lines to describe the hair & features.The style is redolent of Romanesque portraits. I wanted to create a border with narrative imagery but instead I decided to use the design of a Corinthian capital. I applied the paint through a stencil that I cut. I like the graphic rough hewn look of the white paint on the vermillion ground. I also like the way the arabesques of the Corinthian capital echoes the curves of the hair in the portrait. I love the art of the Romans & Etruscans. I think the piece is inspired by portraits on Roman coins & medallions but there is a Modernist element that brings Matisse to mind.
