About The Artwork

The main idea of the series "The HEAD" is the study of the term "Face". The “face” of the icon appeals to the concept of “personality”, which, in essence, is the humanization of an abstract adored and deified image. To some extent, the images of fashionable gloss duplicate this principle, exactly the opposite. Idealized images of the fashion industry tend to depersonalize the object of adoration. A person without a "face", without a personality, just an empty mask for worship. It is no coincidence that I decorate them with gem stones. A style in art called GEMISM (from the term Gemstone) formed the basis of this aesthetic. One of the theoretical backgrounds of GEMISM is the idea that the human soul, after the death of the physical body (as an eternal substance) finds a place in the material world inside the most durable “eternal” mineral on the planet - adamant. Then it’s given a cut, which turns the adamant into a diamond. A soul on earth works on itself as a cutter on a stone. Both the soul and the diamond are of a purity grade. The purest souls become the purest diamonds. That’s why precious stones adorn my "fashion icons" from the "The HEAD" series. A person always wants to try on this mask. People tailor themselves to fashion, thus making themselves the same. The face is lost first, and then the personality. And I cover these "heads" with precious stones, "collecting" human souls on them.

Dasha Skorubska-Kandinsky was born in Kiev in 1985 to a family of artists. Her father, Anton S. Kandinsky, (the descendant of Vasily Kandinsky) was a well known post soviet Pop Artist. He lived and worked in New York, where he rose to fame after developing his signature art style known as ‘Gemism'. He passed away in His studio in Manhattan in 2014. Nowadays Dasha continues increasing and enriching her father’s style as well as her own art style, which she calls academicism. She believes that "a work of art should be syncretic” and therefore, uses an academic manner as the foundation for her artwork. It is complete only when it contains both myth (non-verbal philosophy), and aesthetics. She combines mystical expressionism, naked sexuality and symbolic mythology. In her work she combines the "raw and hot flesh" of the Paint with the cold heart of her gemstones to create a work of art which is supplemented by both. Her works are part of private collections in Russia, Ukraine, USA, Germany, France, Monaco, China, Switzerland, Israel, as well as the collection of Kolodzei Art Foundation. And the Museum of Modern Art of Ukraine (Kiev) and the Museum of Contemporary Russian Art (USA).
