About The Artwork

"The Shaman's Journey" watercolor, 55x55 cm (21.7x21.7 in) In ancient traditional societies around the world, there was a perception of illness as a loss of soul. So, in the practice of shamanism, there is a special ritual performed by the shaman to return the soul. The shaman enters a trance state and through a series of transformations into totem animals, embarks on a journey through the Lower worlds in search of a lost soul. An artistic interpretation of such a journey is painted in this artwork. The shaman's spirit leaves the body in the form of a swift-footed deer, and enters the realm of the dead. Slipping a snake through the roots of the world tree, it remains unnoticed by the guardians of the underworld, and finds a lost soul among the dead souls of her native tribe. Using the power of the bear, the shaman pulls this soul out and carries it on wide eagle wings over the world of the living, through the Upper world, revealing the beauty of the Middle world. Renewed and calm soul returns to the family, that are waiting for her at the ritual fire. This is how the shaman completes the healing process of body and soul. Ancient myths teach us the main thing: to remember that a person has a soul. And the healing process is a deep intense journey.
