About The Artwork

(acrylic on canvas, 50x40 cm, 2013/2014) Would you be surprised if the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland descend into the subway station at - let's say - University Square in Bucharest? Just like any other hurried passenger on his way to work, in a business suit, on a very usual morning. Or you'll be too (pre)occupied in catching the next train to your corporate job, where time is (just) money, to even care or dare to be amazed for 1 minute? The painting's meanings deal with post-modern and post-industrial world, uniformization, loss of wonder and chronophagy.

Cătălin Precup (b. 1981, Târgu Mureș) is a Romanian visual artist specialized in fine art painting. He has studied at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, and is currently based in Sibiu, where he teaches painting and is part of the Brukenthal von Studio collective. His works have been presented in personal and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Although figurative, he is interested more in capturing that subtle and sometimes total slip of the reality in the realm of the incredible, the imaginary, the unusual and the oneiric, than mere representation, with a clarity of a medused oculus mentis. Consequently, through several alchemical stages, which can be subsumed under a process of creative visualization, it transfigures a reality analogous to the usual one, which leaves more room for allegory, reflection, transrational, sensuality, humor and enigma.
