About The Artwork

Tokyo II was my first abstract. I based it on my earlier landscape of the Cherry Blossom festival and the lights on the Meguro River in Tokyo from a family visit a few years ago. I looked at the landscape realist scene and said let's look at the core and what you see when you don't look at the picture. This was the carry away. The palette was shifted a lot from the original landscape with lighter tones of the cobalt and ultramarine blues as well as burnt sienna and umber sections. The overall feel of celebration was maintained.

Jamie Somes Landscape and abstract painter, Jamie Somes, brings a dynamic use of color and light that intoxicates the eye. Intrinsic in his creations are movement that makes his work alive. Somes brings his vast exposure to many cultures--living in Asia for years, New York and now Los Angeles, his warm authentic spirit and his study of art, architecture, graphics and urban map making –to his visual storytelling. As a merchant banker in Asia, a corporate finance advisor and for the last few years the founder of a fund focusing on sustainable environmentally sound foods, Art has and is Jamie’s first love and gift that brings him great joy. He shares this joy generously and humbly with his collectors. He enjoys the problem solving & techniques of landscape painting but really engages with the opportunities of color and light, grabbing the viewer, taking them away to build an emotional bridge with them filled with positive energy. His godfather, Noah Goldowsky, a painter and gallery owner in Chicago & NYC, was a great advisor and introduced Jamie in high school to some of his key influencers: William de Kooning, Franz Kline, Helen Frankenthaler and Sam Francis
