This work is inspired by my mother, Miss Ellen. When I was growing up, everyone called my Mother Mistress Mack. When she went to Tortola to live, the folks there called her Miss Ellen. She told me that a tailor named Charley Semper took her from her native Montserrat to neighboring Antigua. She learned her tailoring trade from him. She eventually left the Semper family and went to work for my Grandparents who opened a laundry in St. Johnston's Village, Antigua. They did the laundry for the American Soldiers at the American Navy Base. She and Samuel fell in love and got married. He was my Grandmother's favorite child. My Mom is depicted here (with her hoe and a bottle of water) going to work in her sugar plantations at the break of dawn. She took in washing for the backra, baked cakes and breads for sale, raised cows and pigs, made all our clothes. She gave my father the money for our first property and encouraged him to acquire two sugarcane plantations. I will write more about my Mom in a blog. My Mom was totally illiterate. It took me several attempts before I finally settled on this style, colour, composition. I would like the viewer to feel the energy and resourcefulness emitting from my Mom.

U.S. Virgin Islands
Rosine Smith was born on the island of Antigua, but now resides in the Virgin Islands. The culture, and style of the people of the islands have always intrigued her, and she began painting, writing, telling, and illustrating her 'stories of the islands' at an early age. She is a highly skilled fibre artist as well as an accomplished painter. She works in several media, exploring a myriad of styles. She says: “I enjoy painting stories from my childhood days. I think about a scene or incident and paint. I have to compose the painting in my head because that scene does not exist anymore.” Rosine has participated in numerous solo and group exhibits in Antigua and Barbuda, St. Thomas and St. Croix. She has won many awards for her art and her work is prized by collectors worldwide. Rosine has no formal training in art, but she holds a B A Degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Accounting from The University of the Virgin Islands. She taught Computer Applications at the Day-adult Education Center for many years and has also taught Art in the Public Schools. Rosine says, “I am a Seventh-day Adventist Christian Artist. I love the Lord and I love all peoples. I am humbled when I think of the Master Designer, Jehovah God, whose work has inspired me and has motivated me to paint. When I paint, I strive to capture the style, the soul, the architecture, the color, the laughter, and the dialect of the Caribbean I knew in the 1950s. Especially, I struggle to capture the RHYTHM!' Rosine is a self-taught artist
