About The Artwork

This piece is inspired by a place I walk under frequently in a area of Berlin. Under the S Bahn overpass are multiple layers of posters pasted to red brick walls advertising cool bands and theatre in the city. I love the splash of colour, the peeling layers, the drips and drops of rain and moisture that escape from the tracks above, the mystery of walking under this bridge into the cobbled square ahead on the other side. Berlin is often described as gritty but one of the things that makes it beautiful are the juxtaposition of decadent architecture as a backdrop to make shift structures, graffiti and modern life. I feel that Berlin exudes the complexity that is life. I hope that my paintings provide the same sense of depth and contrast.

As a painter, I live out my belief that art is about creation as opposed to imitation and work from my raw emotion as opposed to within a representational form of expression. Colour field painting and abstract expressionism influence my work. I expose layers of paint, plaster, and found paper with my brush, palette knife and a sander. The paintings symbolize the complex layers of our selves, made up of our varied and individual experiences. As humans we want to be viewed in our entirety as Aristotle said, “ The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” In our entirety, even with our scars and flaws, we can be quite beautiful.
