We move slowly in the rain Print

In 2018 I had a chance to visit Venice, Italy. One rainy day I moved through the crowds of people in St Mark's Square, and I then took refuge on a balcony, high above the crowds. I moved from being one of the people, to looking down on them, and from my vantage point I could see the beautiful patterns, instantly recognisable, of humanity in the rain. I kept the colour palette here somber, with bursts of colour here and there. When you look at this painting, I hope it makes you wonder - where are these people going, in the rain? Are they arriving from somewhere, or leaving to go somewhere? Is your eye drawn to any particular figure? Or do you come back to seeing the crowd as a whole? I wanted to pose the question - is this about one person, or about all of us? Up until this point, I have mostly painted still life paintings. But in Italy something changed for me - I decided to paint boldly, to trust my instinct, and to tell the bigger stories about being human. This is one of the first paintings I painted in this spirit, and it just fired me up to want to paint more exploring this direction. This painting is 30 inches by 30 inches - or 76cm squared. It is made from a sturdy canvas construction - it's a deep edged canvas, unframed, painted uniformly black along the sides.
