The two art works entitled "Wings of change" was inspired by a childhood friend born in the Soviet Union and now living in 'New Russia'. She has had to hide her homosexuality for many decades due to the anti-gay propaganda that exists in that country and the persecution of homosexual citizens that takes place both in law and by society at large. Traditionally, when a newborn baby is brought home in Russia it is wrapped in swaddling and tied with a pink or blue ribbon to indicate if the child is a girl or a boy. These works provide a commentary on the typical stereotypes that are placed on our children. The provision of removable wings heralding a new era where everyone is given the freedom of choice. The works have been purposely left in a gender-ambiguous state, questioning the entire nature of our current perceptions of sexuality. It also provides a glimpse into the thoughts on gender-reassignment and the use of bionics and species engineering with the employment of detachable wings for her hero. In this light, gender and sexuality is no longer just a question of perceptions and social acceptance but has very real and physical possibilities.
