About The Artwork

Yggdrasil - The Nordic Tree of Life in Gond Folk Art The Gond Art form comes from the Gond Tribal folk, who have their origins in Central India. The tribes who have always lived in harmony with nature often reflect this in in their paintings representing different elements of nature like animals, birds, trees, and flowers. Gond Art has also represented several paintings depicting Indian mythology and stories. The Mahua tree is an important topic of Gond Art. This tree is considered a Kalpavriksha - a wish fulfilling divine tree. One of the most archetypal Gond paintings is that of deer standing under a Mahua tree, with the deer antlers almost merging into the tree branches. When I started reading about Nordic Mythology, I was amazed by how many common strands there were between Nordic and Indian mythology. But the most enduring image was that of Yggdrasil – The Cosmic tree that wraps around the nine worlds of Nordic Mythology and the 4 deer standing under it nibbling at its leaves among many other mythical animals and beasts. Each of the 9 worlds have been represented in detail with its inhabitants staying true to the Gond style, whether it is Surtr, the Fire god from Muspelheim, or the Frost Giants from Jotunheim. Several animals and mythical characters live among Yggdrasil’s branches and roots. Chewing away its roots is dragon Nidhogg . An eagle sits high on its branches, and a squirrel, Ratatosk runs up and down the tree sending the dragon’s insults to the eagle back and forth. There is also Sleipnir, who is Odin’s eight legged horse (and also his son, Loki’s offspring). At the bottom is Hel is a female being who is said to preside over an underworld realm of the same name, where she receives a portion of the dead. Art Prints available!
