In this piece I have attempted to distill a human face down to its non-binary core hoping to portray only the human, as free as possible from the cultural artifacts of gender polarization. The title of the piece, which appears written on the work itself, intends to suggest that we can only begin to know the human once we resist the urge to oversimplify and categorize people. This is a mixed media piece, assembled from painted art boards depicting variations of a human face, combined in a single image by layering multiple photographic exposures. This piece is part of an ongoing study that I call "dynamic portraits". The study consists in layering multiple depictions of human faces in various states, in such a way that appears to portray a single subject. The resulting ambiguities tend to impose on the viewer an involuntary, unsettling drive to attempt and narrow the chaos down to a single facial expression. This results in an image that never seems entirely static. Some figures seem to display ambiguity of gender or race as well.

My inspiration comes from observing how contemporary society is in an accelerating process of moving from real life to symbolic representations of life. I make use of mixed elements of communication media as art materials, even as those become increasingly immaterial. In this new reality I do not see many practical distinctions between word, sound, color, and shape. All are equally sanctioned weapons on the contemporary battleground of meaning. I make art out of the elements we now make life with, which is why in my work you may see the news, the ads, the symbols. You may see verses rushing through crowded spaces. You may hear the city as an open opera of homeless words and notice wordless faces. From physical to digital and back. I investigate and report. The vagueness of it all, depicted as faithfully as I can.
