In painting this work I thought about what it means to exist within a supportive community. I come from Edmonton, in Northern Canada, and much of what I painted while living there shows a sort of warm/cold contrast. Stark whites in the work reflect the sunlight bouncing off snow, and pinks and purples are an ode to winter sunrises that grace the sky on -30 degree C mornings. Winters are cold, but everyone who has been there knows that warmth exists within the hearts of people who stick out the cold year after year. It's widely accepted that genuine friendships blossom near winter fires. My work is created through a personal, intuitive process that involves multiple layers, and quite often months of work for each painting.
