About The Artwork

I try to make many of my photographs resemble paintings, and in this case was inspired by some of the colour field paintings of Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. I worked on images of gravestones which I shot in a local churchyard. I transformed one of the images into this sombre, yet luxuriant colour version. I have another more colourful version which I will post on the Saatchi art website. I also like the possibilities of wordplay, (perhaps this relates to my other career as a published author of short stories), hence the title "A Grave Situation". I hope viewers of this work will appreciate a beautiful image which almost hides its origins as a graveyard scene. I have printed this image on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta Satin, an archival photographic paper of 300 gsm. It can be window mounted and framed, or mounted on fibre board backing, whatever is the buyer's preference. Each print is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, dated and signed by Jeff Laurents, the artist.

I studied for my degree in photography at the Polytechnic of Central London and also lectured in Cinema for the British Film Institute. I have specialised in digital image making for many years. My art is mostly abstract images or landscape photographs which I have transformed digitally to resemble paintings rather than straight photographs. I also create cityscapes, images of iconic local scenes which I sell to art galleries and retail outlets in my area. My approach is experimental, and when working on my images I will reject a version that doesn't appeal to my sensibilities, and I will continue to work on an image until I'm happy with the result. Some of the titles of my artwork are deliberately tongue in cheek, as in my images 'A Grave Situation' and 'One of The Beetles', or ironic as in 'Global Warming'. I try to create images that appeal to the viewer's feel for shape, colour and texture and sense of composition, or for strong graphic monochromes, so my work is motivated by aesthetics.
