Elina - Renversé (Limited Edition of 40, 2 Sold) Print

"Elina - Renversé" is one-of-a-kind, signed and numbered edition print from the Esprit de Corps series I've created in collaboration with some of the world's most-exciting and beautiful ballet dancers. A former professional dancer myself, I created the series to examine the movement of ballet. Each of the photos illustrates one entire movement, from beginning to end, within the language of ballet. The technique and effect you see are not the result of Photoshop, but of an innovative and unique lighting setup. The photos come out of the camera as you see them here. Given that I'm starting from a digital negative, I will actuate a small variation into each original edition print, making every print unique. It will be printed full-bleed. Eventually, I'm going to turn the series into a compendium of the ballet lexicon in art book form. This is your chance to get in on the ground of some amazing work from it. Ballet Note: Renversé, an advanced ballet move and combination of several steps, begins in this case with a plié coupé, which is where the dancer bends one leg and brings the other behind it, to the ankle. The dancer then places the back leg down, also in plié, while sweeping the front leg forward while straightening it. As the standing leg straightens and rises on pointe, the front leg then sweeps to the side into second position, before continuing back for a full rond de jombe. The back leg bends into an attitude croisé in the back while the standing leg turns just slightly, the upper body pitches a bit forward and the dancer brings her arms into a croisé devant position. This last position is the crisp moment you see in this photograph. Renversé is one of the more romantic moves in ballet and can be often be seen in choreography that calls for a dancer/character to charm or seduce another. With its combination of open and closed positions, as well as it's contretemps sequences, it both invites and closes off the watcher. Among the most famous uses of the renversé are the stage crossings Odile, the Black Swan, does in her seduction of Prince Albrecht and the audience in Swan Lake.
