About The Artwork

Fort Gratiot was built in 1814 during the War of 1812 to guard the juncture of the St. Clair River and Lake Huron. Named after the engineer who supervised construction, Charles Gratiot, Fort Gratiot would be occupied on and off until 1879. With a surge of vessel traffic on Lake Huron in the early 1800s, the need for a Light Station to guide vessels through the water way became very important. In 1823 Congress approved the funds to build the first lighthouse in Michigan and the second oldest on the Great Lakes. The first lighthouse in this area was built in 1825 and was located approximately where the first Blue Water Bridge stands. Along with the poor design and construction, the original tower was built in a bad location. During a severe storm in 1828 it collapsed into the river. In 1829, a new lighthouse was built north of the military fort by Lucius Lyon, who later became one of Michigan’s first U.S. Senators. The new location made it easier for ships to spot as they entered the rapids at the head of the St. Clair River.

Hello, let me introduce myself. My name is Robert Hover, and I am a photographer, videographer, and creator. I am a 59-year-old leukemia survivor who drove trucks for 15 years, but after being diagnosed with leukemia and having a bone marrow transplant, I started pursuing my creative passion of photography. I love doing landscape photography and especially sunrise and sunsets, no two are ever the same. God paints a different one every time. I also enjoy waterdrop and lens ball photography. I enjoy exhibiting and selling my work at art galleries and printed on merchandise. Some of my photographic artwork is on display at Lake Huron Woods senior community in Fort Gratiot, Michigan. My creative gear consists of the following items: Nikon D3400 and D5500 digital cameras with 18-55mm and 70-300mm lenses. DJI Osmo Action camera. DJI Mavic Air 2 drone. Samsung S9 plus smartphone. Osmo Mobile 3 gimbal for smart phone. Pluto Triger for waterdrop photography. Pluto Valve for waterdrop photography. Merry Nine crystal ball for lens ball photography. Canon PIXMA PRO-100 High performance professional photo printer. DaVinci Resolve 17 for video editing. Epidemic Sound for video editing.
