GATE BRIDGE OF DEVENTER AND THE IJSSEL IN YELLOW AND GREEN. Photo taken at the Deventer Rail Bridge with slow shutter speed. Deventer was connected to the railway network in 1865 when the connection with Zutphen was completed. The following year the line was extended to Zwolle. The Zwolle-Zutphen section was part of the Arnhem - Leeuwarden railway line. A connection to the west was only established in 1887, when the line to Apeldoorn was opened. The railway bridge over the IJssel was the first part of the route to be constructed. The Apeldoorn - Deventer railway line was originally intended as a local railway and was constructed by the Koningelijke Nederlandsche Locaalspoorweg-Maatschappij. The connection with Almelo followed in 1888. The Apeldoorn-Almelo route was soon taken over by the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij, which also introduced express trains on the line in 1892. Apeldoorn had been connected to the west since 1876 as a stop on the Amsterdam - Zutphen railway. In 1917 Amersfoort - Apeldoorn - Deventer - Almelo became the main route from the west to Twente. Apeldoorn-Zutphen became a secondary line.
