About The Artwork

'Human Beans no.1', relates specifically to my long history as a Performance artist. My influence for this piece was a combination of the German artist whom I met three times…Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol. The performance and the photograph are to do with the question, what is normality? So, its about creating an act of unusual behaviour to gauge the reaction and create debate. This is a ‘C type’ gloss photograph taken with a medium format Pentax camera using high grade Fuji medium format slide film. The work is sold as one of a limited -edition of 25 only and is signed by the artist on the rear. The work is rolled and shipped using special packaging. Here is an extract from my latest book, Being in Time, Performance art (available on Amazon) which best describes the photograph. The book describes the meaning and history of Performance art and my life as a Performance artist. I hope you enjoy and relate the image to the words. Beans (Human Beans) Book extract: I liked the idea of word and image play. So, Baked Beans as tinned things in tomato sauce and the image of them, all warm and slightly slimy was to my mind a usable food for performance. Once again, a common everyday item had come to my attention. An item, a foodstuff that is on every supermarket shelf and that is generally widely known. The noise of the canteens tinny sounds disappeared; ………… I assertively plunged my head full tilt into the large silver pot of orange baked beans. Whistling my way down deep into the foody substance fully aware of the dangers of their heat. As my ears became immersed in the baked vegetable all voices and sounds became dull and distant. I could feel the sheer warmth and heat of the slimy liquid penetrating my ears with a rather pleasant bubbling noise and physicality. All seemed in perfect harmony with the world. The experience and action felt like an eternity. As I arose from the beans which were now falling from me in drips and drops, tomato sauce penetrating my upper being (a pun intended) I was confronted with Agnes the dinner lady screaming in my face! But screaming in a way I did not expect. The action had obviously taken her by surprise, but she was screeching with pure delight. The static image after the action was more interesting than expected. As I became completely static the beans and bean juices continued to slop, fall, pour, drip and bounce down me. Time stood still. Moments passed. 'Being in Time, Performance art' by Marty St James published by Zidane Press.

Marty St. James is known as a pioneer of the framed video portrait and works in a range of contemporary media including performance art, photography, digital video and drawings. He lives and works in London and France. His best-known work is the The Swimmer, a multi-screen installation in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. In 2000, his video work Boy Girl was presented in the benchmark exhibition with master artists from each year of the 20th century at National Portrait Gallery. St James’ performative and sculptural video work acknowledges portraiture’s function as a ‘map’ of our relationship with ourselves and the wider world. The intimate, human-focus of his art can be interpreted as a theoretical reflection of the contemporary person existing under the influence of modern technological systems that are affecting human consciousness. St James has travelled the world and has held artist-in-residence commissions in Russia, China, Australia and Antarctica, where he has found a deeper understanding of humanity for his own art practice. He has encountered profound meaning in the indigenous people’s art beliefs and rituals in America and Australia that has influenced his work. His digital prints and video art work Oneiric reference notions of 'Dreamtime', a belief common across cultures, that refers to time as a beginning that never ends and is a continuum of past, present and future.
