In this particular photographic series, Mala Vadgama explores mental health topics within the BAME (Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority) community of women. She aims to tell individual narratives of women who have suffered from various struggles such as eating disorders, loss and depression. She juxtaposes them against images of other women from other cultures, demonstrating the often invisible and misunderstood nature of mental health struggles everywhere and the cultural judgements made about mental health. Mala brings an authentic and insightful perspective to these narratives due to her own battles with anxiety, depression and loss. This exhibit is part of a collection which will be exhibited in its entirety in the future. “I am so inspired by the women who have been brave enough to share their stories of their mental health. Many of these women have often faced the cultural stigma of mental health conditions and lack of understanding and compassion in society. While some have felt isolated and alone, others have had support to get them through. Each one has a unique story to tell of their internal journeys. I thank them for giving me the opportunity to openly share our voices together as this photographic exhibition is not just about my images but about their stories too.” Mala states.
