About The Artwork

There's something magical about river life in Vietnam. This family was on their way to a nearby market. I wanted to capture an impression of who they were and the lushness of their surroundings. But I especially wanted to bring forward their hats. The photograph is printed by a highly respected professional photographic printing company on high performance Epson photo paper: Matte Finish, 10.3 mil thickness, 104 ISO brightness, 94% Opacity.

Perhaps it's the result of my long career as an archivist but when I take a photograph I find myself immersed in the moment. The act of setting up and then taking the photo causes time to slow, the mind to focus, and the senses to experience everything that is around me. I guess it’s another way of arriving at mindfulness. Ten years ago, as a result of courses delivered by Jim Zuckerman, I discovered the power of filters. When used and manipulated in combination with Photoshop, they can lift images into a whole new realm. It taught me that what we capture as a photo isn’t a static document of what we saw at one moment in time. It proceeds through its own evolutionary path - from the image our mind saw in front of the camera, to the image we captured on the sensor inside the camera, to the manipulation we performed on the image to make it the 'perfect' picture, to what I enjoy doing - further manipulating the image to create other interpretations - to let the image speak to us about the myriad ways a single scene, a single instance in time can be represented. My hope is that the creation of new interpretations will invoke fresh emotions that will enrich our experience of what we see in front of the camera and help to give that ‘moment in time’ a deeper meaning.
