About The Artwork

One cannot deny the fact that Suburban life has had a cult-like grip on its members. Sure, the ex-city sprawl may have started as a response to the housing crisis associated with increased urban density, the forceful impact of societal supply and demand dynamics on linear economics. The impetus, though, soon morphed; in part due to Hollywood-induced ideas of single-family homes with manicured lawns, white picket fences, and their idyllic façade of affluence where men have jobs, women do lunch and are happy. Albeit, most homes were Levittown-style soulless, and many women enjoyed a Stepford Wives sort of happiness. The true undercurrent of the exodus, in large proportion, came as resistance to desegregation, and the promise of bland homogeneity of the burbs. As change, though moving at a glacial pace, is inevitable, and in the long run, education and knowledge prevail over ignorance, the suburbs have become more diverse. These days, residents, regardless of gender, tend to be mostly working class, and more kids go to school with peers of various ethnic backgrounds. Nevertheless, the desire persists to portray that fleeting image of perfection with meticulously landscaped gardens, backyard barbeques, pool parties, and yes, even the sometimes kitsch, always iconic, bright pink flamingo.

Exploration and innovation form the basis of my artwork. I don’t believe in the conventional practice of creating a very cohesive body of work, where the art pieces are like siblings dressed in similar clothes. I alternate between traditional paintings and digital drawings using common geometrical concepts as my building blocks. Throughout millennia, lines, triangles, pyramids, spheres and other geometric tools have been fundamental to art as well as architecture. I often start a project from a mental image by exploring new ways of combining these shapes, discarding many creations along the way until I have an evocative piece. A true work of art to me is one that interacts with its viewer in an intimate way; a meditative piece that promotes different emotions every time it’s seen. Each one of us leads a uniquely complex life, and how we experience art is quite personal. One size does not fit all, and this has been an important factor in the success of abstract art forms. My art is abstract, expressive, and sometimes conceptual. However, I have no interest in labels, or categorizations. Alongside each art piece, I may drop a few hints, clues to my original thought process; the rest of the experience is entirely up to the viewer.
