This Abstract Expressionist print was inspired originally by the Alexander Calder sculpture, Two Disks. I studied the sculpture weekly for 3 years, photographing it from a myriad of positions and juxtapositions. I subsequently made prints by layering the images, rotating, adding and subtracting contrast, color etc. Then I added hardscape and human profiles creating this image and over 300 additional images. I am hoping viewers will pause at the work and look into it for the multiple layers as well as contextual suggestions as to social and other implications. The original project, the Calder sculpture, was compelling on a level to which I’m not sure I completely understand. I just know I was compelled to visit it and photograph it constantly for 3 years. The subsequent layering images produced an incredible collection of “pictographs”, which by title have suggested socio-political significance if not pop cultural references.

I am a photographic artist and photography instructor. For years I produced black and white photographs with very little interest in color work. Recently I have expanded and redefined my work to include black and white and color photo-etching and the layering of my photographic images. By adding color, adding and reducing contrast and repetitive layering of similarly layered images, I am able to create entirely different images that have increased depth and perception. I am trying to produce a cubism effect through a modern abstract process. Photography, reaches significant highs as an art form when it illuminates the world around us. The artist's unique perspective illuminates that kernel of our being - our collective and universal being. That image can be a constant reminder of the uniqueness of the universe and the pervasive beauty that surrounds us.
