Denis Anfilon was born into a Czech-Russian family in Prague in 1967.
He attended the Václav Hollar Art School (1983–87). Since 1987, he has been working as a stonemason and restorer repairing important Prague monuments. In parallel with these roles, he also works with figurative sculpture and drawing which leads him to abstraction via radical stylisation. Since 1994, he has been restoring marble altars in the interiors of Baroque cathedrals, where he also designs and creates visual artefacts. Since 2001, he has been working as an artist, restorer and artistic gilder for the Our Lady of Victory monastery and church. Alongside this, he also develops abstract work in painting and sculpture at the Na Maninách studio which was destroyed following the 2002 great floods along with the majority of the artwork. In 2003, together with colleagues, he set up the Agnus restoration association. Aside from restoration, he also applies his skills to design and implement artistic work for sacral interiors. In 2006 he resumed his artistic post at the Modřany studio. For some time now, he has been considering the spiritual essence and principles of art and has defined his understanding in the concept of essential art. In 2011 he set up the Experimental Gallery of Essential Art at the Modřany Bell Tower where he also assumes the role of curator. In 2014 he was appointed professor of conceptual art at the Karlín Studio 45.
Artwork appearing in private collections in Russia, Canada, USA, England, Sweden, West Germany and Cyprus.
