SANCTUARY: ROSIE Print

Sanctuary explores the psychological we have with our hair. Taking clues from commercial fashion and beauty imagery, the hair can provide a level of comfort and security we associate with the sanctuary of the home, and when damaged or mishandled, we find ourselves exposed and vulnerable. Sanctuary was inspired by Julia Hetta, Bettina Von Zwehl and hair through the ages in fashion photography. From the era when Richard Avedon and John French reigned to 2016 where Mert & Marcus, Terry Richardson and others who dominate the landscape of fashion photography. The physical representation of hair has changed throughout fashion but the emotional connection we have with out hair hasn't. This was my graduate project for my degree in Photography from the University of Portsmouth but this idea didn't come about in my final year. This idea was a gradually process of gathering ideas, inspirations throughout my time in University. The subject matter of hair really resonate in at the start of degree and around this point I shaved all my hair off because hair loss. It was at this point I had my attention drawn to hair, whether out of jealousy or gazing at the beauty of it.
