About The Artwork

In my life I have had moments, dark and light, where I have felt closest to the other side of the veil. Feeling at one moment as if I was seeing into the other side of life, and in other moments feeling blinded to it. Stemming from those moments has been the desire and need to dig deeper into spirituality, how it affects each of us and what it means to me. And in that, the relationship between flesh and spirit and the resulting relations. At times they seem to be in unison and at others working against each other. Some times ugly, and other times absolutely beautiful. “Spiritus Obscura” is a raw, exposed exploration into the beauty of this relationship in a manner inspired by the classic paintings I grew up around, coming from a family heavily involved in fine art. It is also a separation from much of my other work in that all these shots are captured in camera, one exposure, with the only post production being color correction. There is no manipulation of the image itself. Believing that the relationship, between flesh and spirit, cannot be manipulated is the leading factor for the decision to keep these images out of photoshop. It can be molded, and nurtured, but not manipulated. It is what it is.

Born in 1973, the son of a sculptor/biker dad and hippy chick/biker mom, I grew up in Phoenix, AZ before moving east in 1997. "It doesn't matter one bit what you choose to do in life, just make sure you're happy doing it". Words spoken into my life by my dad and words I live by today. Since I was "knee high to a grasshopper", I watched my dad's creativity birthed in the form of sculpture. Watching this was nothing less than inspirational and a model of his own words in action. This set the wheels in motion on the choices I have made in life. Through this journey I have worked my creativity out through various mediums and found a special place residing in my heart for storytelling. I have always been intrigued by the dualities and changes we face as we take each step in life. These subjects being primarily life and death, struggles of spirituality and loss of innocence. My work focuses at these subjects through the lens of deeper exploration into the details around us that we often take for granted.
