Description: Five thousand years ago gold, silver, and copper began to be mined in a southwestern corner of Spain, the border province of Huelva. Descending from mountains behind Seville, a red river drops into the Mediterranean coloured by the minerals it holds in suspension. This is the eponymous Río Tinto. Evaporation caused by temperatures that can raise the mercury above 50 degrees Celsius unveils the colours of the river's bank. Here the artist has captured the hues and history of this singular place. In ancient times few wore robes of violet, the colour most expensive to produce in all the world. It was generally reserved for emperors, kings, noblemen, and the sellers themselves of purple. In Huelva, the goldsmiths wore purple, and they sold their wares to kings.
