About The Artwork

St. Antony's Church in Dhanushkodi is a famous Catholic church located in the town of Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu, India. Dhanushkodi is a small town situated on the southeastern tip of Pamban Island, and it is known for its historical and religious significance. St. Antony's Church holds great importance for the local Christian community as well as for visitors. The church is dedicated to St. Antony of Padua, a popular saint in the Catholic tradition. It is believed that the church was established around the 18th century, although the exact date is not known. The location of the church is quite significant. Dhanushkodi is considered a sacred place by Hindus as well, as it is believed to be the place where Lord Rama built a bridge (referred to as "Rama Setu" or Adam's Bridge) to cross over to Lanka in the epic Ramayana. This adds to the spiritual and cultural diversity of the area. St. Antony's Church in Dhanushkodi suffered severe damage during the devastating cyclone that hit the region in 1964. The cyclone caused extensive destruction, including the submergence of most of the town under the sea. Since then, the town has remained largely uninhabited, with the church standing as a poignant reminder of the calamity.
