About The Artwork

Wing fragment of Four-spotted Chaser, Libellula quadrimaculata on white paper. This was one of the 13 images that were in a collection titled Icarus that were exhibited in Foto Skoda Prague in February 2011. The story of Icarus is the escape from captivity. Daedalus fashioned some artificial wings and the two escaped, but Icarus fell into the ocean. Myth tries to explain human existence and how things or why things exist and man's psychology. I didn't kill the dragonfly and tear off its wings to shoot this. It's quite small. If you walk along a river path during the season of dragonflies emerging, the tits and sparrows are quite noisy. As the dragonflies emerge, the birds swoop down to eat them because they are fairly helpless before they take flight. So if you look about on the ground, quite frequently there are tiny wing shards that the birds leave behind. To emerge and take flight is very dangerous thing to do as Icarus learned. The image was shot with macro lens plus an extension. The wing is like a double paned window. There are very fine membranes on both sides of the veins. When the dragonfly emerges, you can see water inside each of these little cells and as the water drains, the wing forms and becomes this amazing structure. During this time when the wings are forming and hardening, the newly emerged insect is helpless and target for birds.
