About The Artwork

This new linocut is inspired by the phenomenal music video “Game change” of Polish popstar Monika Brodka. While creating it she was inspired by the story of the Albanian Sworn Virgins. Women who, by taking a vow of chastity, take on a male role in society while gaining all the privileges associated with being a man. It is a story about a woman who, after the death of her husband, takes over his role. The only attribute left of her femininity is a corset. And although the corset was always a strong statement, for me as a costume designer shoes have always been the most important in creating a character. While working in the theatre, I noticed that the actors also built their roles starting with shoes. They allowed them to jump easier into their new identity. From the moment I saw those black&red shoes, in my eyes, they became a symbol of not only a global generational change and gender unification, but also more locally of what is currently happening in my country. As Brodka herself says: "This story, although abstract, is relevant to the current situation of women in Poland. Sadly, you don't have to be a Sworn Virgin to have your rights decided by men in the 21st century." And here is the link to the “Game Change” music video, which inspired me to do this artwork, with amazing costumes of Zuzanna Markiewicz, an acquaintance of mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97oBjuw_akM Monika Onoszko artworks started selling in 2022.

Monika Onoszko is an interdisciplinary artist working in a few creative fields. She graduated from The Strzeminski Academy of Fine Art in Poland and the kimono design faculty in the Onoe Fashion Institute in Japan. Her career began (with success) in the fashion industry. From the very beginning though she engaged with theatre projects designing costumes for the most famous Polish scenes, including the biggest as National Theatre. She kicked off her movie adventure by working with the best professionals on creating costumes for the movies of a well-known Polish director Jan Jakub Kolski and winning awards for best costumes in 2018 in Poland. In her portfolio, there are also numerous tv commercials, fashion videos and music videos including many international productions. She worked with such clients as Warner Bros, VF and LG Electronics. Recently she is creating linocuts which with woodblock printing and etching were always her favourite techniques. Despite the fact of having the same achievements in this field as well (several art exhibitions in Japan, Spain and Poland) art was always some sort of a side job/passion while the costumes were the main focus. Now she decided to finally make a switch and put the graphics at the centre of her career… Monika Onoszko artworks started selling in 2022 also as NFT: https://opensea.io/collection/reddot-polygon
