About The Artwork

The origin of this design goes back to 1968 (after four years of my attending the California College of the Arts in the Bay Area). It occurred while I was camping atop Mount Madonna, East of the town of Freedom, in the Santa Cruz mountains of California. Its precursor came to me in the morning, while the sun was rising behind the mountain and before the moon had set over the Pacific Ocean. I imagined I could see Hawaii, where I spent a semester in University, and Tahiti to whence I sailed. I imagined the destinations formed a perfect triangle with where I was sitting. Then, I imagined a square (with sides the same length as the triangle) on its end, between me and the moon, my school and home. I continued on, to connect stars with locations I had visited, up and down the coast, forming shapes in my mind, until an infinitely large circle had unfolded. The next image was this design, which came to me in what was almost like an out-of-body experience. As though I were floating above the ocean, I imagined the infinite number of polygons constrained within a finite circumference. Their sides were now decreasingly smaller. The first of these two designs had one thing in common: their polygons shared an apex. This was my Pacific Epiphany.
