ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I come from a family of textile makers over generations, and I have been collecting fabrics ( most created in a factory in the town I grew up in ) for a long time. Many of them are overdies created in the printing process in the factory and sold off as scrap. I have always found these ‘accidents’ beautiful and have treasured them as works of art in their own rights. Some years ago I began working with the fabrics to create flags as a way of exploring their South and trying to express a sense of patriotism. Patriotism displayed using simple homely products. With a home made, crafted look. Symbolically they represent what South Africa is, a mixture of cultures some beautiful some not so, some pristine some used and broken, all coming together to form a beautiful symphony or poetic whole.

From a family full of makers Michelle has always been creating and wanted to be a painter from very young. She painted a lot, earning a BFA, and an MFA from a university with a very traditional approach to painting education. Michelle is an experimental artist, enjoying navigating the journey along the way and bouncing along from one idea and work to another and back again. She loves working inseries often making multiples of any image and sometimes revisiting ideas over and over in an attempt to extract another experience of it. Her subject matter is diverse, ranging from portraits, landscapes, abstracts and including collage. She particularly enjoys capturing or conveying a story through the image, whether the personality of the portrait or the process of the mark making to find or describe the subject matter. The pursuit of the process is the main subject across all the many themes. Michelle is a mum to 4 girls, who are all very creative themselves, they are a wildly neurodivergent family and there is seldom a dull moment.
