About Laurens Vermaesen

From 1974 till 1982 I lived and worked in London. I did my art training at the Croydon College of Art. Since 1983 I live and work in the Netherlands as a free-lance illustrator, painter and teacher. My address is: Verdistraat 137, 2324 KC Leiden, The Netherlands. Tel: +31(0)71-5720341. E-mail: Next to illustations and paintings I also do (commissioned) portraits and murals and I also teach at 3 different art centers. The Renaissance painters, the Pre-Raphaelites, 19th century Russian realistic painters and the Impressionists are my sources of inspiration. The illustrators that have influenced me are a.o. Arthur Rackham, Howard Pyle, N.C.Wyeth, James Avati and Alan Lee. What they have in common are well considered compositions, excellent technical skills and an exquisite use of colour. And, what's more, they paint with their hearts. The techniques I am using are oils, watercolour, (coloured)pencil and pen-and-ink.I love realism and fantasy and a happy mixture of both. To me Art is life. Art can heal, art can bring joy and peace in your heart, art can make you see things in a different way. I have come to believe that our responsibility as artists is to bring hope and joy through beauty to a despondent humanity. I believe people want to be uplifted. Creating beauty, in one way or another, can do just that. I feel our call is to inspire others by what inspires us as individual artists.
