Erna Ucar was born in Ankara in 1979 and graduated from the Graphic Design School, Fine Arts Faculty of Hacettepe University in 2001. She lived in Moscow between 2004-2014 and while there became deeply fascinated with Russian Fine Arts.Spending years living in Cyprus, Turkey, Russia, Malaysia and Luxembourg, experiencing life and light in different geographies and cultures has had a great impact on her life and her art. The Room Series is about modern people, the relationships I observe in my immediate environment, popular culture and media, the idiosyncratic moods of crowds from different cultures. Observing different cultures, after spending years living in Cyprus, Turkey, Russia, Malaysia and Luxembourg, experiencing life and light in different geographies and cultures, I realized that modern people live in similar small apartments, same coffee in the morning, we watch same tv shows, listen to the same music, and we work in similar offices in big cities, which brings loneliness at the end. The most special aspect of my technique is combining different chemistries and textures, different materials, raw canvas, graphite, acrylic, and sand; o achieve a harmony fed by contrasts with bright colours accompanying the pastel tones in my colour palette. Different textures with relief-like, fluid and creamy consistency play the leading role. Placing compositions and figures on the canvas for a long time with a unique front-back perspective is the most important stage, making me feel like I’m producing graphic design works with traditional methods, and huge 2D posters with protagonists and extras. My technique carries traces of graphic art with my figures emphasized in the fauvist style, bold colours and a construction free from 2-dimensional perspective.
