ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A Detroit-area boy eagerly awaits a haircut at Executive Cuts and Styles, one of the premier barber shops in the city. July 2018. This image was created as part of Antonio Johnson’s You Next project, which took the artist across the United States to capture the communities within black barber shops and explore the ways they operate as sites for identity formation and wellness work. Shot between June 2018 and June 2019, You Next is Johnson’s seminal work. The photos inspired his first book, You Next: Reflections in Black Barbershops.

Antonio M. Johnson is an emerging visual artist whose work is a masterclass in the power of capturing the beauty and complexity of urban life. With a keen eye for detail and an unerring sense of intimacy, he creates authentic images and without frills, always capturing the soul of the subject. A self-taught photographer and experienced filmmaker, Johnson has earned a reputation for embedding himself in his subjects' worlds, establishing meaningful and personal relationships. His work is undeniably intimate and soulful, reflecting his deep understanding of the human experience. Johnson's remarkable 2020 monograph, You Next: Reflections in Black Barbershops explores the critical role of barbershops in cultivating Black male identity and wellness. It was praised as a "must-have keepsake" by legendary street photographer Jamel Shabazz and conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas described it as "a snapshot of one of the Black community's oldest institutions." In a review for Aperture magazine, photographer Jeffrey Henson Scales wrote of You Next, "The work is inspired by the crisp objective style of Walker Evans's social landscapes fused with the intimacy of Gordon Parks's loving approach to the human experience." Johnson has exhibited his work at some of the most prestigious venues worldwide, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), and the New York Portfolio Review. He was also a part of Reflecting In the Spirit of Kamoinge with EnFoco and Kamoinge. Artists such as Roy De Carava, Adgers Cowan, Anthony Barboza, and Shawn Walker founded this legendary Black photo collective. Johnson's work has been published in numerous outlets, including Black Futures on the One World/Random House imprint in December 2020. His photos have been featured on Issa Rae's Insecure on HBO, and he has made media appearances on FOX 29 Good Day Philadelphia, Aperture, Google and Pop-Up Magazine, PBS, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The New York Post, The Brooklyn Circus, Georgia Public Broadcasting, NewsOne, and Blavity. Antonio M. Johnson's work is an ode to the beauty of urban life and a celebration of the human experience. With his unique vision and remarkable talent, he will continue to captivate audiences for years to come.
