ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Gullfoss trail is a series of 17 photos taken on the trail to Gullfoss from the east side. The first pictures are in the spirit of neo-romantic Scandinavian paintings from the end of the 19th century, under some influence from the pioneer of Icelandic landscape painting, Þórarinn B. Þorláksson. The final images are dramatic, relating to a sublime menace. The photos are cyanotypes, 42 x 66 cm, done on 57 x 76 cm 300g Saunders Waterford watercolour paper, tinted in a sumac leaf solution. The cyanotype process is an artisanal alternative photographic technique, originally from 1842. More than one print may be made based on the same image. Due to the organic nature of the process, each version is unique.
