Splittail is from a series I call, Rockers. They may be gently hand activated to rock and will eventually settle back on their resting point. The concept of balance is a key aspect of this work, as it is a quality I believe we all strive for in our lives. My work is inspired by the incredibly diverse and ever-changing life forms I encounter where I live. Whether they be animal, insect, botanic, seed or sprout; I enjoy the dizzying array of forms and visual input that life brings. Without a doubt, these things are infinitely more complex and interesting that the flashing lights and colors on a screen. I also make utilitarian pieces for my family and home. I enjoy the process of finishing the surface of a piece to see how the beauty of each species of wood is revealed. Sometimes I will use a furniture finish on a sculpture in order to make a given surface "pop". While I do not consider myself a minimalist, I was strongly influenced by this movement early in my career. It seemed to return a sense of mass to sculpture at a time that quite a lot of work tended to deny gravity and attempt to draw in space.

Much of my practice includes collecting and preparing wood from local trees. When I began this process years ago, the material came from friends or neighbors who cut down trees and offered the wood to me. Now I have many trees on my property that may drop large branches. Most require careful and regular pruning. Recently I was forced to take down a sugar maple that was rotting from the inside out. This provided me with a considerable amount material that is dense and quite excellent. It also provided much of the material used to make “Red Fence.” The scroll form in the piece was made with wood I saved from pruning pear trees some years ago. I’d like to think that my work functions like poetry, except it uses forms instead of words to evoke thoughts and feelings that lie deep and barely realized.
