Meditative Asian-influenced Sumi-E black brushstroke created with a rich color brown and sepia background. Simplicity with black abstract mark-making. There is only one of these monotypes- not a series. Each image is original and one of a kind and signed on front below the image. A 24"x18" work created with oil etching inks on a 30" x22" archival Arches 88 paper. The artist studied Chinese Brush Painting for many years and was juried into two Sumi-E International exhibitions at the National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan. Monotype is a traditional fine art process used for hundreds of years. Each original painting is created with oil or etching inks applied directly onto a steel or copper plate. High-quality archival paper is then placed over the newly painted surface and then hand-pulled through a fine art printmaking press. The pressure transfers the painting from the plate to the paper while also embossing the paper. The image is reversed. The plate may be run through the press many more times as additional layers of paint are applied to create a rich surface.

Twyla has been a professional artist for over 30 years. Her work is in over 75 corporate collections and has shown in galleries and museums internationally including the National Museum of Art; Osaka, Japan. This exhibit travelled to Art Museums in three Asian countries. Twyla creates in several styles and mediums- painting, monotypes, photography, digital, and includes large-scale original canvasses over 12 feet in length for corporate, hospitality, and healthcare projects. Twyla has completed extensive commissioned works and works with the Saatchi Curators. She graduated from the University of Iowa, B.A., and received a grant from the Enrico Donati Foundation in NYC, NY. Her art studies began with classical portrait and figurative painting and gradually turned to abstract. This led her to create large-scale abstract paintings. Wanting to re-examine her work and explore different directions to enhance creativity, she began the study of Sumi-e, Chinese brush painting, and Chinese calligraphy. She also studied Printmaking for five years with a master Printmaking Studio. Creating across many mediums has always kept her art innovative and the creativity flowing. The artist describes her art: "My art is both planned and intuitively created. I combine both the analytical and direct creative flow – often switching back and forth. Each medium dictates the process. I love to experiment with spontaneous brush stroke, line, and color and I am inspired by the Abstract Expressionist artists and Sumi-E Masters. I feel that my life experiences and my expansion as an artist are woven through me like DNA. It is who I am. It’s always my intent that what I put on canvas and paper tells a story or evokes a feeling that touches everyone’s being, bringing a higher level of inspiration and joy into their lives. By sharing my personal vision and emotion in painting, I hope to draw viewers closer to their own inner worlds."
