Stills, 2014
These paintings are based on film frames. I was interested in the relationship between moving image, still image and painted image. To pause a film is to arrest its temporal flow, and the frame (that was once one of many) becomes severed from its context and given a new status it hadn't previously enjoyed. To then translate it into a painting is an act that further 'slows' the image and monumentalises it.
Most of the paintings were based on small fragments of the image - tiny, unnoticeable, incidental background details which are then brought to centre-stage.
