Political Cut Paper

In 2009 I began a series of tissue paper cut outs inspired by Mexican Day of the Dead papel picado banners. I envision the banners as an ongoing series commenting on social political issues of the day and making a contribution to the historical record. My work draws inspiration from the Mexican artists Rivera, Orozco, Siquieros and Posada as well as the contemporary artists Bansky, Sigmar Polke and Shepard Fairey. Each banner begins with images taken from current news some of which have been sent to me by members of the Remarkable and Curious Conversations artists group.The template is created from a collage of images which is then used to cut tissue paper multiples in two or more colours, black and other colours having some signif
