On the musically beautiful
The investigation in music is much more difficult than in other arts.
There’s abundance of beauty residing in the purely musical. Music
produces beautiful forms and colours in ever more elaborate diversity,
gently overflowing, sharply contrasted, always coherent and yet always
new, self-contained and self-fulfilled.
Music has no protype in nature and expresses no conceptual content. Its
realm is truly not of this world. We know of its beauty yet what kind of
beauty is the beauty of a musical composition?
